What this trial studies
This study tests the effectiveness of providing incentives for individuals to achieve their self-identified harm reduction goals related to methamphetamine use, compared to standard peer harm reduction services. It employs a hybrid effectiveness-implementation framework and a stepped-wedge design, randomizing eighteen community-based peer harm reduction sites. Participants will work with peer specialists to set personal goals, such as overdose prevention training and social support, while receiving incentives for meeting these goals. The aim is to enhance the reach and effectiveness of harm reduction services for methamphetamine users.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older who have used any stimulant in the past 30 days and are willing to engage with peer support services.
Not a fit: Patients who present a danger or threat of violence to peers will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve the effectiveness of harm reduction strategies for individuals struggling with methamphetamine abuse.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using contingency management approaches for substance use disorders, indicating potential for success in this novel application.
