What this trial studies
This study investigates how children with developmental language disorder learn vocabulary in context, focusing on improving their word learning through a novel intervention. The intervention combines metalinguistic training about semantic inferencing and the use of multiple texts with high semantic diversity. By comparing the effectiveness of this approach in both typically developing children and those with developmental language disorder, the study aims to provide insights that can enhance evidence-based practices for vocabulary acquisition. The research will involve two groups of children, each receiving a three-session intervention designed to boost their contextual word learning.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include children in 2nd grade with a standard score of 85 or lower on the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals.
Not a fit: Children with hearing impairments or uncorrected visual impairments may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more effective interventions that significantly improve vocabulary acquisition in children with developmental language disorder.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using contextual learning strategies for vocabulary acquisition, making this approach both relevant and potentially impactful.
