What this trial studies
This intervention aims to enhance walking engagement among school employees in El Paso, Texas, through the 50,000 for Life (50K4Life) program. The study will implement a two-phased adaptive intervention involving random assignments to either a walking challenge alone or with SMS text messaging support. In the second phase, schools that do not show sufficient engagement will receive tailored interventions, either at the individual level with remote education and coaching or at the school level with group sessions and environmental modifications. The goal is to promote brisk walking and improve health outcomes among predominantly Mexican American school district employees.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are full-time school district employees aged 18 or older who can walk without limitations and are willing to engage with the walking program.
Not a fit: Patients who work at multiple schools or those who have previously participated in similar walking challenges may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly increase physical activity levels and reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases among school employees.
How similar studies have performed: While employer-based walking programs have shown promise in other regions, this specific approach has not been widely tested on the U.S.-Mexico border, making it a novel intervention.
