What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of prehabilitation interventions tailored for lower socioeconomic populations to reduce postoperative complications. Participants will receive preoperative education, engage in moderate aerobic exercise, and utilize text messaging and pedometers to enhance their recovery process. The study aims to address barriers faced by underserved populations by implementing inexpensive and accessible interventions. Participants will be assessed at multiple points leading up to their scheduled surgeries to monitor improvements in mobility and discharge times.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are English or Spanish speaking patients scheduled for general surgery, colorectal, or surgical oncology procedures at Boston Medical Center who can ambulate independently.
Not a fit: Patients with limited reading skills below a 5th-grade level may not benefit from this study due to comprehension issues with consent materials.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to faster recovery and reduced readmission rates for patients from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
How similar studies have performed: While many studies have explored prehabilitation, this specific focus on lower socioeconomic populations is novel and has not been extensively tested.
