Improving recovery after thyroid surgery using advanced ventilation techniques
Pressure Supporting Ventilation and Electroencephalography-guided Extubation for Free of Unwanted compLications (PEACEFUL): a Randomised Controlled Trial
NA · Gangnam Severance Hospital · NCT06165562

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of pressure supporting ventilation combined with EEG-guided emergence in reducing airway complications following thyroid surgery. Adult patients under 40 years old will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group, which utilizes advanced ventilation and EEG monitoring for extubation, or the control group, which follows conventional extubation practices. The primary outcomes include the incidence of emergence coughing and the lowest oxygen saturation levels post-surgery, while secondary outcomes assess various recovery metrics and patient satisfaction. The goal is to determine if the new approach leads to better recovery outcomes compared to standard methods.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult patients under 40 years scheduled for thyroid surgery.
Not a fit: Patients with conditions such as sleep apnea, obesity, or those undergoing more complex surgeries like radical neck dissection may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce airway complications and improve recovery experiences for patients undergoing thyroid surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While similar approaches have been explored, this specific combination of techniques is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
