What this trial studies
This study examines the effects of a kindergarten-based intervention that involves parents to enhance physical activity and fitness among preschool children aged 5-6 years. It is designed as a two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial where kindergartens are divided into a usual care group and an intervention group. The intervention group will receive an additional 2.5 hours of physical activity per week on top of the standard 30 minutes mandated by the government. Outcomes will be measured at baseline, after 10 months, and at a 16-month follow-up to assess the impact of the enhanced curriculum.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 5-6 years who can communicate in Chinese and participate in physical activities in a standard kindergarten setting.
Not a fit: Children with serious diseases, mental illnesses, physical disabilities, or cognitive deficits that limit their ability to participate in physical activities will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve physical activity levels and cardiorespiratory fitness in preschool children, potentially reducing childhood obesity rates.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success with similar interventions aimed at increasing physical activity in preschool settings, indicating a promising approach.
