What this trial studies

This research project aims to evaluate whether dental treatment can enhance the quality of life for patients suffering from severe eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or non-specific binge eating disorder. Patients requiring extensive dental work will receive either resin composite restorations or prosthetic therapy, while others will be placed on a waiting list for comparison. The study will assess changes in oral health-related quality of life, orofacial functions, and oral aesthetics over a two-year period. The hypothesis posits that there may be no significant difference in quality of life outcomes between treated and untreated patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or non-specific binge eating disorder for at least 10 years, requiring dental treatment for at least six teeth in one jaw.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those unable to provide informed consent will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly improve the oral health-related quality of life for patients with severe eating disorders.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically targeting this population, similar studies in dental rehabilitation have shown positive outcomes in improving quality of life for patients with dental issues.
