Improving laryngoscopic view during intubation in children

Improvement of Laryngoscopic View by Bed-up-head-elevated Position During Tracheal Intubation in Paediatric Patients

Observational University of Malaya · NCT05885789

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate whether the Bed-Up-Head-Elevated (BUHE) position enhances the laryngoscopic view during tracheal intubation in pediatric patients aged 3 to 12 years. Participants undergoing elective surgery requiring intubation will have their laryngoscopic views assessed in two positions: the traditional sniffing position and the BUHE position. The study will compare the POGO scores, which measure the quality of the laryngoscopic view, between these two positions to determine if the BUHE position provides a significant improvement. Additionally, the ease of handling the laryngoscope will be evaluated during each position.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 3 to 12 years scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia that requires tracheal intubation.

Not a fit: Patients with known difficult airways, airway malformations, respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, or recent upper respiratory infections may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved intubation success rates and reduced complications in pediatric patients.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored positioning during intubation, this specific approach using BUHE in pediatric patients is relatively novel.
