What this trial studies

This observational study focuses on the surgical reconstruction of total brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) to enhance hand function recovery in infants. Investigators follow a defined protocol to reinnervate the lower trunk using optimal nerve roots, addressing the complexities of restoring shoulder, elbow, and hand functions. The study aims to provide a detailed analysis of nerve reconstruction techniques and their functional outcomes, emphasizing the importance of thorough documentation and long-term follow-up to assess recovery. Various hand function scales will be utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions over an extended period.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are infants who have undergone brachial plexus exploration and reconstruction for total obstetric brachial plexus palsy and have reached at least four years of follow-up.

Not a fit: Patients who had selective distal neurotization without brachial plexus exploration or those who underwent secondary procedures to the hand may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve hand function recovery in infants with brachial plexus injuries.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results in restoring hand function in infants with brachial plexus injuries, indicating that this approach is supported by previous findings.
