Improving hand movement after stroke with functional electrical stimulation
Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation on Hand Functions in Stroke Patients
NA · Cairo University · NCT07456293
This trial will test whether functional electrical stimulation (FES) combined with conventional physiotherapy can improve hand function in people aged 40–60 recovering from subacute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.

What this trial studies
Participants aged 40–60 in the subacute phase after ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke will receive functional electrical stimulation alongside conventional physiotherapy to target impaired hand function. The intervention is intended to facilitate muscle activation and promote neuroplasticity to aid recovery of fine motor control that often remains incomplete after standard rehabilitation. Individuals with severe cognitive impairment or pronounced spasticity are excluded to ensure safety and the ability to participate. Outcomes will focus on changes in fine hand motor tasks and independence in activities of daily living.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people aged 40–60 in the subacute stage after ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke who have adequate cognition and manageable spasticity.
Not a fit: Patients with severe cognitive impairment or severe spasticity are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, FES could improve fine hand control and increase independence in daily activities for subacute stroke patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies of FES for post-stroke hand recovery have shown promising but variable improvements, so this approach builds on partly established evidence.
