What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to investigate the relationship between psychological traits and adherence to CPAP therapy in adults diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. Participants will complete questionnaires assessing their psychological characteristics and self-efficacy before starting CPAP therapy. Additionally, the study will evaluate the effectiveness of a motivational phone call made one month after therapy initiation in enhancing adherence to CPAP use at the three-month follow-up. The trial will compare adherence rates between those who receive the motivational call and those who do not.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older with a diagnosis of severe obstructive sleep apnea who are starting CPAP therapy.
Not a fit: Patients with central sleep apnea, significant comorbidities, or those who have previously used CPAP therapy may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved adherence to CPAP therapy, enhancing treatment outcomes for patients with severe sleep apnea.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of combining psychological assessment with motivational intervention is novel, similar studies have shown that psychological factors can influence adherence to treatment in chronic conditions.
