What this trial studies
This observational study aims to address the significant variation in how clinicians communicate with parents during periviable labor, specifically for infants born between 22 and 24 weeks gestation. It seeks to benchmark current antenatal optimization practices across the UK and establish an evidence-based conversational structure for decision-making discussions. Through semi-structured interviews with parents and clinicians, the study will identify key priorities and barriers in communication, ultimately developing recommendations to enhance these critical conversations. The goal is to empower parents with accurate information to make informed decisions regarding their infants' care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are parents of infants born at periviable gestations of 22 to 24 weeks.
Not a fit: Patients whose infants are born before 22 weeks or after 24 weeks gestation will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more consistent and effective communication between healthcare providers and parents, improving decision-making for extremely premature infants.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on similar studies, the approach of standardizing communication in high-stakes medical situations has shown promise in other contexts.
