What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of adding clinically integrated breastfeeding peer counseling (ci-BPC) to standard lactation care in reducing disparities in breastfeeding intensity and duration among Black and Hispanic/Latine families. It is a randomized control trial conducted at three hospitals in the Chicago area, comparing standard lactation care with the addition of ci-BPC. The study aims to enhance breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and access to support while identifying barriers and facilitators to implementation.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are pregnant individuals between 12 and 20 weeks gestation who are English or Spanish speaking and planning to deliver at one of the participating hospitals.

Not a fit: Patients considering pregnancy termination or adoption, or those with prior exposure to ci-BPC will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve breastfeeding outcomes for Black and Hispanic families, promoting better health for both mothers and infants.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using peer counseling to improve breastfeeding outcomes, making this approach promising yet still focused on specific demographic disparities.
