What this trial studies
This project aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of community health worker (CHW)-led strategies to enhance fruit and vegetable intake and lower blood pressure among hypertensive individuals facing food insecurity. Participants will be recruited from food distribution events and must meet specific criteria, including self-reported hypertension and living in designated zip codes. After baseline data collection, participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: no strategy, CHW education, or CHW education and navigation, with the intervention lasting four weeks. The CHW will provide tailored support to help participants adopt healthier eating habits.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 to 69 with diagnosed hypertension, experiencing food insecurity, and living in specific Florida zip codes.
Not a fit: Patients who have participated in focus groups for the intervention will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve blood pressure control and overall health for food insecure individuals with hypertension.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using community health workers to address health disparities, suggesting this approach may be effective.
