What this trial studies

The investigators will run a randomized controlled experiment in Taabo, Côte d'Ivoire, testing supply- and demand-side interventions to increase uptake of recommended antenatal care. Pregnant women under six months gestation will be randomized to receive an informational video, a joint financial-planning session with their male partner, vouchers to reduce costs, combinations of these, or standard care. Primary outcomes include attendance at recommended ANC visits and receipt of recommended services, measured through facility records and household follow-up. The trial focuses on practical, low-cost interventions that could be scaled if effective.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Pregnant women aged 15 or older with estimated gestational age under six completed months who live in the Taabo Health & Demographic Surveillance System area, and their male partners aged 15 or older who are married to or the main romantic partner of an enrolled woman, are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Women beyond six months gestation, those already attending all recommended ANC visits, or people living outside the Taabo surveillance area are unlikely to benefit from these specific interventions.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the interventions could increase timely antenatal visits and reduce financial barriers to receiving recommended care, potentially improving maternal and newborn outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Vouchers and informational campaigns have increased antenatal visit uptake in other low- and middle-income settings, but combining partner-focused financial planning with vouchers is less well-studied and evidence is mixed.
