What this trial studies
This study aims to enhance the prescription fill rates of naloxone, a lifesaving medication for opioid overdose, among patients discharged from the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department. Participants will receive either standard written education or an enhanced overdose education (EOE) that includes a concise handout and a video review with a support person. The study will compare the effectiveness of these two educational approaches in encouraging patients to fill their naloxone prescriptions within one month of discharge. By addressing the barriers to filling naloxone prescriptions, the study seeks to improve outcomes for individuals at high risk of opioid overdose.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients being discharged from the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department with a naloxone prescription following opioid-related conditions.
Not a fit: Patients who have previously received naloxone education, have a known allergy to naloxone, or are not being discharged home will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly increase the availability of naloxone for patients at risk of opioid overdose, potentially saving lives.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown that enhanced educational interventions can improve prescription fill rates for naloxone, suggesting this approach may be effective.
