What this trial studies

This project focuses on enhancing the accessibility of rapid COVID-19 tests through a supported employment initiative called Peer Connect2Test (PeerC2T) for people who inject drugs (PWID). Participants will be recruited by a community partner that offers syringe exchange services and trained to become peer health workers (PHW) who will distribute SARS-CoV-2 rapid tests to their peers. The study aims to improve knowledge, self-efficacy, and health behaviors among PHWs, while also evaluating the impact of PeerC2T on testing uptake among other PWID using the RE-AIM framework. The overarching goal is to create a community-driven intervention that promotes widespread access to rapid testing among this vulnerable population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this project are individuals aged 18 and older who inject drugs and can understand English.

Not a fit: Patients who do not inject drugs or are under 18 years old may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this initiative could significantly increase COVID-19 testing rates and improve health outcomes for people who inject drugs.

How similar studies have performed: While similar community-engaged interventions have shown promise, this specific approach is relatively novel in the context of COVID-19 testing for PWID.
