Impact of Imipenem and Meropenem on Gut Bacteria and Drug Resistance
Effect of Imipenem and Meropenem on the Digestive Microbiota and the Emergence and Carriage of Multidrug-resistant Bacteria

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates how the antibiotics imipenem and meropenem affect the digestive microbiota and the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in patients with Enterobacteriaceae infections. It focuses on hospitalized patients in intensive care units who require treatment with these carbapenems. The study aims to understand the implications of antibiotic use on gut health and resistance patterns, which are critical in managing infections caused by resistant strains. Data will be collected from patients at specific hospitals in France to assess these effects.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are French-speaking patients aged 18 and older who are hospitalized in intensive care units and require treatment with carbapenem antibiotics.
Not a fit: Patients with a carbapenem allergy, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those under legal guardianship will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into managing antibiotic resistance and improving treatment strategies for infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.
How similar studies have performed: While the study addresses a significant public health issue, similar studies have shown varying degrees of success in understanding the impact of antibiotics on gut microbiota and resistance patterns.
