Impact of fume events on cabin air quality and aircrew health in French aircraft

" Évènements Feux/Fumées/Odeurs Lors Des Vols aériens : conséquences Sur la qualité de l'Air à l'intérieur Des Cabines d'Avions et Sur la santé Des Personnels Navigants d'Une Flotte aérienne française " (AviSan)

Observational Institut National de la Santé Et de la Recherche Médicale, France · NCT06270095

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the air quality in commercial aircraft cabins during fume events compared to non-fume events, focusing on the detection of organophosphorus compounds from engine oils. It involves real-time atmospheric measurements of these compounds and carbon monoxide during flights, alongside self-reported questionnaires from flight crews regarding their health symptoms. The study aims to assess both immediate and delayed neurological effects on aircrew members exposed to these conditions. The research is conducted over a year, sampling around 100 fume events and corresponding control flights.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are aircrew members aged 18 to 67 who can provide informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant or over the age of 67 will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved safety protocols and health monitoring for aircrew members exposed to harmful cabin air quality.

How similar studies have performed: While studies on air quality and occupational exposure exist, this specific focus on fume events in aviation is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
