What this trial studies

This randomized, controlled study investigates how regular exercise affects gut microbiota composition, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity in individuals transitioning from normal glucose tolerance to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Participants aged 45 to 65 will be assigned to either a 12-week exercise program or remain sedentary for 16 weeks. The study will assess the differences in metabolic health and gut microbiota between those who exercise and those who do not, across three groups: normal glucose tolerance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes. The goal is to understand the role of exercise in preventing and managing type 2 diabetes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are sedentary individuals aged 45 to 65 who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Not a fit: Patients who are physically active or have chronic diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into how exercise can improve metabolic health and gut microbiota, potentially preventing or managing type 2 diabetes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results regarding the benefits of exercise on metabolic health, but this specific approach focusing on gut microbiota is relatively novel.
