Impact of body posture on airway protection in Parkinson's disease
Effect of Forward Trunk Flexion in Patients With Parkinson's Disease on the Airway Defense System
This study looks at how leaning forward affects breathing and coughing in people with Parkinson's disease to see if it relates to their overall lung health.

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates how forward trunk flexion in patients with Parkinson's disease affects their respiratory muscle strength and voluntary cough. It aims to establish a relationship between postural abnormalities and the deterioration of these respiratory functions over a three-year period. Additionally, the study will explore correlations between respiratory muscle strength, voluntary cough strength, handgrip strength, and pulmonary dysfunction index as potential screening methods for assessing airway defense mechanisms in these patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Not a fit: Patients with significant cognitive deficits, severe neurological diseases other than Parkinson's, or unstable cardiovascular and severe pulmonary diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved strategies for managing airway protection in patients with Parkinson's disease, potentially reducing the risk of aspiration pneumonia.
How similar studies have performed: While there is existing research on postural abnormalities in Parkinson's disease, this specific approach linking trunk flexion to airway defense mechanisms is relatively novel.
Eligibility criteria
