Impact of body position on optic nerve health

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter in Patients Undergoing Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery in the Lithotomy Position

What this trial studies

This observational study evaluates how the lithotomy position affects intracranial pressure by measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter using ultrasonography. It hypothesizes that increased venous return and intra-abdominal pressure in this position may lead to changes in optic nerve sheath diameter. The study will involve patients undergoing retrograde intrarenal surgery who meet specific inclusion criteria. The findings could provide insights into the physiological effects of body positioning during surgical procedures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 18-65 who are undergoing retrograde intrarenal surgery and are fully oriented and cooperative.

Not a fit: Patients with a BMI over 30, those with previous intracranial or eye surgery, or those who are disoriented or uncooperative may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of intracranial pressure dynamics during surgery, potentially improving patient safety and outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, similar studies have explored the effects of body positioning on intracranial pressure with varying degrees of success.
