What this trial studies

This observational program combines a retrospective quantitative analysis of endoscopists who trained between January 2022 and the study start date with a prospective assessment of subsequent immersion training. It will examine process measures, trainee performance outcomes, service impacts, and perform an economic (cost-effectiveness) evaluation of current immersion practices. Data are collected from participants at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and linked service metrics to understand both individual and system-level effects. The goal is to determine which immersion approaches, if any, offer meaningful benefits and represent value for money.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are surgical, gastroenterology, or clinical endoscopy trainees who have received or are about to receive immersion training in gastroscopy or colonoscopy.

Not a fit: Experienced consultant endoscopists, non-endoscopy staff, or trainees who do not take part in immersion training are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could accelerate trainees' skill development and help endoscopy services operate more efficiently and cost-effectively.

How similar studies have performed: Small local or pilot programs have suggested benefits from immersion approaches, but there has been no comprehensive large-scale evaluation to date.
