Imaging and follow-up of pigmented tumors on the front of the eye in children

Imaging and Evolution of Pigmented Tumors of the Anterior Ocular System in Children

Observational Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Saint Etienne · NCT07120178

What this trial studies

This is an observational programme using non-invasive ocular imaging to track pigmented anterior segment lesions in children. Participants undergo slit-lamp exams, dermatoscopy at ×20 and ×400, and confocal microscopy to document size, color and microscopic features over time. The goal is to use imaging changes to adapt follow-up schedules and avoid invasive excision when imaging shows no suspicious cells. All procedures are painless and intended to provide data to personalize monitoring and answer parents' questions about likely evolution.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Children under 18 seen at their first dermato-ophthalmological consultation who have a pigmented tumor of the anterior ocular system are the intended participants.

Not a fit: Patients who were over 18 at their first exam or those whose lesions already require immediate biopsy or treatment based on clinical findings are unlikely to benefit from a monitoring-focused approach.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could reduce unnecessary surgical excisions and allow more personalized, less invasive monitoring for children with conjunctival pigmented tumors.

How similar studies have performed: Non-invasive imaging of ocular pigmented lesions has been applied in adults and isolated pediatric reports exist, but comprehensive, systematic pediatric follow-up data are limited, so this approach is relatively untested in children.
