What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify a sub-population of individuals carrying GBA1 mutations who are at increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Participants will undergo a comprehensive evaluation involving various non-invasive tests, including sensory assessments, blood tests, blood pressure measurements, brain ultrasounds, and neurological evaluations. The study will compare the findings of GBA1 mutation carriers with diagnosed Gaucher patients and healthy individuals who do not carry the mutation. The goal is to detect early signs of Parkinson's disease that may appear up to twenty years before diagnosis.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals who are GBA1 mutation carriers and are willing to participate in the study.

Not a fit: Patients who are already diagnosed with Parkinson's disease or have dementia will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to early identification and potential preventive strategies for individuals at risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research into the relationship between Gaucher disease and Parkinson's, this specific approach to identifying prodromal signs in mutation carriers is relatively novel.
