Identifying biomarkers for urinary stone recurrence

Exploring Multiomics Biomarkers for Urolithiasis

Observational Chinese University of Hong Kong · NCT05452291

This study is trying to find specific markers in urine that can help tell if people are likely to get kidney stones again, by comparing those who have had stones before to those who haven't.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to analyze urine samples from 100 Chinese patients with a history of recurrent urinary stones and a control group of non-stone formers. By employing a multiomics approach, including metabolomics and proteomics, the study seeks to identify potential biomarkers that differentiate between recurrent stone formers and those without a history of stones. Following initial analysis, a larger cohort of 1000 patients will be validated over a three-year follow-up period to assess stone recurrence through clinical evaluations and imaging. The ultimate goal is to correlate identified biomarkers with clinical outcomes related to stone recurrence.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older with a history of recurrent urinary stones.

Not a fit: Patients with active urinary infections or those with radiolucent stones may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to the development of predictive biomarkers that help prevent urinary stone recurrence in patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the multiomics approach is gaining traction, this specific study's focus on urinary stone recurrence is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
