Identifying and differentiating thyroid nodules using acoustic imaging

Identification and Differentiation of Thyroid Nodules by Acoustic Imaging and Viscoelastic Parameters

Mayo Clinic · NCT06207188

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify and differentiate thyroid nodules through advanced acoustic imaging techniques and viscoelastic parameters. It will evaluate the effectiveness of vibro-acoustography in detecting thyroid nodules and compare its specificity in distinguishing between malignant and benign nodules against traditional ultrasound methods. Additionally, the study will assess the diagnostic value of Shear Wave Ultrasound Vibrometry and Comb Push shear elastography in correlating results with pathology. The study will also explore the response to alcohol ablation in patients with recurrent thyroid cancer.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include male and female patients aged 8 and older who are suspected of having thyroid cancer or have palpable lymph nodes requiring biopsy.

Not a fit: Patients under 8 years old or those who have recently undergone biopsy procedures for thyroid nodules or lymph nodes may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more accurate and non-invasive methods for diagnosing thyroid cancer, improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using acoustic imaging techniques for similar diagnostic purposes, indicating potential for success in this approach.

Eligibility criteria

Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

* \* Male and female patient volunteers ages 8 and up who are suspicious for thyroid cancer

  * Patients who have palpable and sonographically detectable lymph nodes or nonthyroidal neck masses and are referred to Radiology Department or Endocrinology for fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB)
  * Patients 18 and up who were previously diagnosed with thyroid cancer and treated with thyroidectomy and recently diagnosed as having recurrence nodes on thyroid bed or on their neck

Exclusion Criteria:

* Because thyroid cancer is rare under the age of 8 years, children younger than this age are excluded from the study
* Having FNAB or surgical biopsy on thyroid in less than two weeks for thyroid nodule detection group
* Having FNAB or surgical biopsy on cervical lymph nodes or non- thyroidal masses for this group of patients
