What this trial studies

Participants receive either a SHOFU Ceramage hybrid resin composite onlay or a SHOFU Block HC Hard hybrid ceramic onlay to restore carious molars. Restorations are checked at baseline and at 6, 12, and 18 months using visual clinical exams and quantitative wear measurements. The trial compares clinical performance over time, including failure modes and wear resistance of each material. Enrollment criteria focus on patients able to tolerate restorative procedures and complete follow-up, while certain cavity types and specified oral-hygiene categories are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults with molar cavities suitable for onlay restorations who can tolerate procedures, sign informed consent, and commit to visits at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with ICDAS 4/5 cavities, onlay cavities needing cusp coverage, or those who cannot attend in-person follow-ups are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could identify which onlay material lasts longer and shows less wear, guiding dentists to choose restorations that may last longer for patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous clinical comparisons of hybrid resin composites and hybrid ceramics for indirect restorations have shown mixed but sometimes promising results, so this trial builds on existing evidence.
