What this trial studies

This is an observational study enrolling patients aged 65 or over who consult participating general practitioners in Reims and who have at least one prescription for a treatment intended to last more than three months. Data are collected during GP consultations about patients' knowledge of their medications and related factors such as number of drugs, communication with the prescriber, and sociodemographic information. The primary goal is to describe the level of understanding of chronic treatments in this population, and secondary analyses will identify factors associated with better or worse understanding. No experimental intervention is given; results will be used to inform primary care practices and potential future interventions to improve medication understanding and adherence.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are French-speaking adults aged 65 or older who visit a participating general practitioner and have at least one prescription for a medication intended to be used for more than three months, and who do not have neurocognitive disorders or legal guardianship.

Not a fit: Patients who are non–French-speaking, have diagnosed neurocognitive disorders, live in medical/residential care facilities, are under legal protection (guardianship/curatorship), or are consulting only for acute conditions without chronic prescriptions are unlikely to benefit from participating.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help general practitioners improve how they explain long-term medications, reducing errors and nonadherence among older patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have repeatedly documented limited understanding and adherence to medications among older adults, so this study builds on established findings rather than testing a novel treatment.
