How often splanchnic vein clots occur in acute pancreatitis and whether they relate to disease severity
Incidence of Splanchnic Venous Thrombosis in Acute Pancreatitis and it's Correlation With Severity of Pancreatitis - a Prospective Observational Study
This project will see if people with acute pancreatitis develop blood clots in the splenic, portal, or superior mesenteric veins and whether those clots are linked to more severe illness.

What this trial studies
Adults aged 18–85 diagnosed with acute pancreatitis will be enrolled and their clinical data, laboratory results, and routine imaging studies will be reviewed. Imaging done as part of clinical care (CT, MRI, or ultrasound) will be examined for thrombosis in the splenic, portal, or superior mesenteric veins. The presence of splanchnic vein thrombosis will be compared with established measures of pancreatitis severity and clinical outcomes. Patients with chronic pancreatitis, malignancy, cirrhosis, established portal hypertension, or pregnancy will be excluded.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults 18–85 with a new diagnosis of acute pancreatitis who meet international diagnostic criteria and can undergo routine clinical imaging, excluding those who are pregnant or have chronic pancreatitis, cancer, cirrhosis, or portal hypertension.
Not a fit: Patients with chronic pancreatitis, established malignancy, cirrhosis or portal hypertension, pregnant patients, or those without clinical imaging are unlikely to benefit from this observational project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If a clear link is found, earlier recognition of splanchnic vein thrombosis could prompt closer monitoring or targeted management to reduce complications.
How similar studies have performed: Previous observational reports have identified splanchnic vein thrombosis in acute pancreatitis and suggested a relationship with severity, but optimal screening and treatment approaches remain uncertain.
