How a child's new Type 1 diabetes diagnosis may change parents' diets

What this trial studies
This is an observational study that enrolls parents shortly after their child is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and repeats measurements one year later. Participants complete food registers and validated questionnaires on Mediterranean diet adherence, physical activity, and anxiety, and undergo a brief physical exam at baseline and follow-up. Data from the questionnaires and exams will be compared to describe how parental feeding patterns and related behaviors evolve over the first year. No experimental interventions are delivered; the study records natural changes associated with caring for a child with new-onset Type 1 diabetes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who are the main person responsible for family meals and live with a child diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes within the past week are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Parents who already follow strict or recently changed diets, do not live primarily with the child, or have household members with other diet-influencing illnesses are less likely to gain useful insights from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If parental dietary changes are identified, the findings could inform family-focused nutritional support and education to improve health for both parents and children.
How similar studies have performed: Some related research shows family routines and caregiver behaviors can change after a child's chronic illness diagnosis, but direct studies specifically measuring parental diet after a pediatric Type 1 diabetes diagnosis are limited.
