What this trial studies
This optimization randomized controlled trial will test a multi-level Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) delivered through hospital-community partnerships in Central Arkansas. The intervention package includes brief bedside engagement, peer support, intensive case management with vouchers, and SELF group therapy sessions. Adults treated for penetrating gun assault injuries at local hospitals will be enrolled and randomized to different optimized component combinations while the study measures preliminary effects on repeat violence. Implementation science measures will be collected to evaluate feasibility, reach, and potential for broader rollout.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older who live in Central Arkansas and are currently being treated at a local hospital for a penetrating gunshot injury, who can consent and are not in police custody.
Not a fit: People with active intoxication, severe cognitive impairment or psychosis, those currently under arrest or in custody, or individuals who live outside Central Arkansas are unlikely to benefit from or be eligible for this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could lower the risk of repeat firearm injury and better connect survivors to community services and supports.
How similar studies have performed: Previous hospital-based violence intervention programs have shown promising but mixed results in reducing reinjury and criminal justice outcomes, and this optimization trial applies a novel multi-level, community-partnered approach.
