What this trial studies

The HOPE (Harnessing Online Peer Education) intervention uses online peer support and behavior-change techniques to encourage participants to increase their daily step counts. Participants must be 18 or older, live in the United States, self-report a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, and have an app that tracks steps; people on insulin or injectable weight-loss drugs are excluded. Step data are collected from participants' own apps to measure changes in physical activity. The trial is conducted by the University of California, Irvine and is located at UC Irvine in Irvine, California.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are U.S. adults (18+) with self-reported type 2 diabetes who use a smartphone or wearable app to track steps and are not taking insulin or injectable weight-loss medications.

Not a fit: People who live outside the U.S., do not use a step-tracking app, or are taking insulin or injectable weight-loss drugs would be ineligible and may not benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, HOPE could help people with type 2 diabetes increase daily physical activity, which may improve blood sugar control and reduce cardiovascular risk.

How similar studies have performed: Previous digital self-monitoring and peer-support interventions for type 2 diabetes have shown modest gains in physical activity and some improvements in glucose control, so this builds on existing evidence.
