What this trial studies
This single-arm feasibility study in Kampala, Uganda delivers a 6-week home-based pulmonary rehabilitation program to children aged 6–17 with post-TB lung disease. Participants receive exercise instructions, a pedometer, and are asked to perform twice-weekly walking and wall-sit exercises with weekly follow-up by phone or home visit. Baseline and 6-week assessments include a 6-minute walk test and the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire to measure exercise capacity and respiratory quality of life. Participants are recruited from an existing cohort or by clinician referral and must remain in the study catchment area for the study period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Children aged 6–17 with previously diagnosed post-TB lung disease who can do mild-to-moderate physical activity and will stay in the Kampala study catchment area are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Children with active respiratory infection, those already in another rehabilitation program, or those living outside the Kampala metropolitan area are unlikely to be eligible or to benefit from this home-based program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could provide an accessible way to improve exercise capacity and quality of life for children with post-TB lung disease in low-resource settings.
How similar studies have performed: Pulmonary rehabilitation has shown benefit in adults with chronic lung disease and post-TB lung disease, but similar home-based programs have not been well tested in children, especially in low-resource settings.
