Helping colorectal cancer survivors keep up with post-surgery surveillance
A Pilot Trial to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Navigation, Interactive Web Education, or the Combination of Both to Promote Guideline-Concordant Colorectal Cancer Surveillance Care
NA · Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center · NCT06995924
This project tests whether patient navigation services, an interactive web program called Current Together After Cancer (CTAC), or both help people with stage I–III colorectal cancer keep up with recommended post-surgery surveillance.

What this trial studies
This pilot assigns patients to one of three arms based on the clinic where they receive care: navigation only, CTAC web education only, or both navigation and CTAC. Navigation includes education about surveillance, reminders, and scheduling assistance, while CTAC provides self-directed interactive web education and a checklist of recommended tests. Participants are enrolled within three months of surgical resection and followed at about 3 months after enrollment and again 12–18 months after surgery to measure receipt of recommended laboratory tests, imaging, and endoscopy. The trial tests whether these supports increase adherence to guideline-recommended surveillance in stage I–III colorectal cancer survivors.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (age ≥18) with stage I–III colorectal cancer who are within three months of standard surgical resection and receive care at a participating clinic and can complete surveys in English.
Not a fit: Patients who are treated outside the participating Seattle clinics, are more than three months post-surgery, are under 18, or cannot complete English surveys are unlikely to benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could increase the number of colorectal cancer survivors who get timely surveillance tests and enable earlier detection of recurrence.
How similar studies have performed: Previous work in cancer care and chronic disease has shown that navigation and web-based education can improve follow-up and screening adherence, though results have been mixed and the combined approach for colorectal cancer surveillance is not yet well established.
