Helping adolescents with metabolic disorders transition to adult care

Fit for Transfer: Targeted Interventions for Successful Transition and Transfer of Adolescents With Inborn Errors of Metabolism to Adult Metabolic Services

NA · University Children's Hospital, Zurich · NCT05413278

What this trial studies

This project aims to evaluate the current transition process for adolescents with inborn errors of metabolism as they prepare to move to adult healthcare services. It will assess their knowledge, skills, and quality of life, and provide structured interventions to improve their readiness for this transition. The effectiveness of these interventions will be measured shortly after implementation and again at 6 and 12 months, focusing on both psychological and biochemical outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adolescents aged 14 and older with an inborn error of metabolism who are currently receiving care from a specialized metabolic unit.

Not a fit: Patients who do not speak German, have cognitive impairments, are in end-of-life situations, or have diseases without established biochemical or physical markers may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve the transition experience and health outcomes for adolescents with metabolic disorders.

How similar studies have performed: While there may be limited studies specifically targeting this transition in metabolic disorders, similar interventions in other chronic conditions have shown promise in improving transition outcomes.
