What this trial studies

Researchers at CHU Martinique will enroll adults referred for endoscopy with a newly diagnosed primary gastric cancer and obtain consent to use leftover diagnostic tissue and serum. Biopsy samples, adjacent healthy tissue, and blood will be tested for Helicobacter pylori and stored in a biobank. The study will estimate H. pylori prevalence among these cancer patients and create materials for later etiological studies, including investigations of environmental pollutant exposures. Results aim to fill regional data gaps about drivers of the higher gastric cancer rates observed in the French West Indies.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (18+) who have lived in Martinique for at least six months, have a new primary diagnosis of gastric cancer, can read French, provide informed consent, and have social security coverage.

Not a fit: People without gastric cancer, individuals under 18, non‑French speakers, those under legal protection, or those unable to consent are unlikely to benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the study could clarify how common H. pylori is in local gastric cancers and help guide prevention or screening efforts in the French West Indies.

How similar studies have performed: Many studies worldwide have linked H. pylori to gastric cancer and used prevalence surveys and biobanks, but comprehensive data from the French West Indies are limited.
