Heart injury after lumbar spine surgery

Evaluation of the Incidence and Risk Factors of Myocardial Injury After Noncardiac Surgery (MINS) in Lumbar Surgery Patients

What this trial studies

This is a prospective observational study enrolling adults aged 18 and older who are undergoing elective lumbar stabilization surgery at Ankara City Hospital Bilkent. Participants with recent acute myocardial infarction, prior cardiac surgery, or chronic troponin elevation are excluded. Investigators will follow patients through the perioperative period to record cardiac events, troponin changes, and clinical risk factors. The main goals are to measure the incidence of myocardial injury after noncardiac (lumbar) surgery and identify associated risk factors.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older scheduled for elective lumbar stabilization surgery who do not have recent MI, prior cardiac surgery, or chronically elevated troponin are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with a recent (within 30 days) heart attack, prior cardiac surgery, chronically elevated troponin, or those undergoing emergency/non-elective lumbar procedures are unlikely to qualify or benefit from the study findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help doctors identify which lumbar surgery patients need closer cardiac monitoring or preventive measures to reduce heart injury.

How similar studies have performed: Perioperative troponin surveillance has shown MINS is common across many types of noncardiac surgery, but specific data focused on lumbar spine procedures are limited.
