Heart and Voice: smartphone voice monitoring for heart health
Evaluation of Voice and ECG Transmission and AI Models Using Voice, ECG and Health Data Collected Using a Mayo Clinic Center for Digital Health (CDH)-Developed App for a Repository: Mayo Clinic CV Research for Heart & Voice Study
We will try to see if short voice recordings from adults' smartphones (and Apple Watches when available) can detect cardiovascular disease or changes in heart health.

What this trial studies
This observational project enrolls consenting Mayo Clinic patients who provide voice recordings using their own iPhone (iOS 14+) or Android device and may pair Apple Watch v4+ data when available. Recorded voice signals will be processed with signal‑processing and machine‑learning methods to identify features associated with cardiovascular disease, wellness, or elevated health risk. There is no drug or procedure intervention; the study collects remote digital data with signed HIPAA authorization. Researchers will compare voice-derived features to clinical information in the medical record to determine correlations with heart health.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult Mayo Clinic patients who are interested, can sign HIPAA authorization, and who use the Mayo patient iPhone app on iOS 14+ with an Apple Watch v4+ (not SE), or who have an Android phone capable of recording voice.
Not a fit: People under 18, those without a compatible smartphone or unwilling to share voice data or HIPAA authorization, and individuals whose voice recordings are unusable (for example due to severe voice disorders) may not receive benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this could offer a low-cost, noninvasive way to monitor heart health remotely and alert people who need clinical follow-up.
How similar studies have performed: Prior exploratory studies have shown promising links between voice features and cardiopulmonary conditions, but the approach remains experimental and not yet validated for routine clinical use.
