Health checks for diabetes, blood pressure, and kidney health in Indigenous communities.
Optimal Approaches to Chronic Kidney Disease Case Finding in Indigenous Communities
This study is testing health checks for diabetes, blood pressure, and kidney health in Indigenous communities to see if it can help identify people at risk for kidney disease and improve their care.

What this trial studies
This project aims to conduct point-of-care testing for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its risk factors, such as diabetes and hypertension, in rural and remote Indigenous communities across Canada. By providing immediate health assessments and tailored treatment plans, the study seeks to identify individuals at high risk for CKD and develop a permanent surveillance system for kidney health in these populations. The initiative addresses the significant health disparities faced by Indigenous peoples, particularly in areas with limited access to healthcare services.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study include Indigenous individuals aged 10 to 80 years living in rural and remote communities, regardless of their known risk factors for CKD.
Not a fit: Patients who are outside the age range of 10 to 80 years or those not residing in rural and remote Indigenous communities may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this initiative could significantly reduce the incidence of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure among Indigenous populations.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that targeted screening in high-risk populations can be cost-effective and beneficial, indicating a promising approach for this initiative.
