What this trial studies

This single-center pilot delivers scheduled telephonic health and wellness coaching to primary caregivers of patients listed for heart, lung, or heart–lung transplantation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Trained coaches work one-on-one with participants to address stress, self-management strategies, and caregiving skills, with outcomes focused on caregiver self-efficacy and burden. Participants must be adults who speak English and are primary caregivers of an active, deferred, or temporarily inactive transplant candidate at Mayo Clinic Rochester. The trial is interventional and designed to explore feasibility and preliminary effects to inform larger trials.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are English-speaking adults who are the primary caregivers of patients actively listed, deferred, or temporarily inactive for heart, lung, or heart–lung transplant at Mayo Clinic Rochester.

Not a fit: People under 18, non-English speakers, those who are non-verbal or extremely hard of hearing, and caregivers unable or unwilling to participate in telephone coaching are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the intervention could help caregivers feel more capable and less stressed, which may improve the support they provide to transplant candidates and indirectly benefit patient care.

How similar studies have performed: Telephone-based health coaching and caregiver support interventions have shown modest improvements in caregiver coping and self-efficacy in other chronic care settings, but application specifically to thoracic transplant caregivers remains limited.
