What this trial studies

This is an observational, single-visit study in which participants soak their hands in a water bath for up to 20 minutes to provoke aquagenic wrinkling. Investigators will document the timing and pattern of skin wrinkling and related observations. The study aims to determine whether the wrinkling response correlates with cystic fibrosis carrier status. The protocol excludes people with certain hand conditions, specific medical diagnoses, or medications that could affect results, and is conducted at a single center.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults who can give written informed consent, are interested in CF carrier-related research, and do not have the listed hand conditions, diagnoses, or medications.

Not a fit: People with cystic fibrosis, prisoners, those unable to speak English or provide written consent, or those with open hand wounds, hand tattoos, missing portions of a hand, diabetes, hyperhidrosis, Raynaud's disease, atopic dermatitis, or who regularly take ACE inhibitors or ARBs are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could provide a quick, low-cost screening tool to help identify cystic fibrosis carriers.

How similar studies have performed: Previous smaller studies have reported an association between aquagenic wrinkling and cystic fibrosis or carrier status, but the method is not yet validated as a screening test.
