Hand measurements and X-rays to identify sex
Anthropometric Measurements Versus Radiologic Parameters of Hand Bones for Sex Identification in Upper Egypt Population: A Comparative Study.
This project tests whether simple hand measurements and hand-bone X-rays can tell male from female in Egyptian adults aged 18 to 50.

What this trial studies
Researchers will collect external anthropometric measurements of the hands and obtain radiographs of hand bones from healthy Egyptian volunteers aged 18–50. Participants with prior hand surgery, deformity, fractures, amputations, or radiographic anomalies will be excluded. The team will compare measurement cutoffs and radiologic parameters to determine how accurately each method discriminates sex. Results will be analyzed to produce sex-specific cutoff values and to compare the accuracy of surface measurements versus radiologic measures.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Healthy Egyptian adults between 18 and 50 years old with intact, uninjured hands and no history of hand surgery are the ideal participants.
Not a fit: People younger than 18 or older than 50, non-Egyptian populations, or anyone with hand trauma, deformity, prior hand surgery, or radiographic anomalies would not benefit from this protocol's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the work could give forensic teams additional reliable measurements to help identify sex from hand remains when pelvic bones are not available.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that hand measurements and radiographs can provide moderate accuracy for sex determination, but accuracy varies by population and measurement technique.
