What this trial studies
Researchers will develop culturally adapted healthy eating modules with input from Hispanic church congregants using focus groups, then deliver the program through lay Community Health Workers in church and home settings. Eight churches will take part, with four churches receiving the intervention and four serving as an attention/control group. Outcomes include changes in mothers' healthy food preparation practices and children's fruit and vegetable intake. The trial emphasizes feasibility and acceptability in a rural, faith-based community context.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are mothers aged 18–45 who have lived in the United States at least one year, have at least one child aged 7–12, and speak English or Spanish.
Not a fit: People who cannot read or write in English or Spanish, who do not have a child aged 7–12, or who fall outside the 18–45 age range are unlikely to be eligible or benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could improve how mothers prepare healthy meals and increase children's intake of fruits and vegetables, potentially reducing obesity risk over time.
How similar studies have performed: Previous community- and church-based, culturally adapted nutrition programs led by lay health workers have shown modest improvements in dietary behaviors, though evidence specifically for rural Hispanic children is limited.
