Group-based Ideomotor exercise to prevent thinking and movement decline in older adults
Effects of the Ideomotor Group Program Exercise on Cognitive Functioning, Motor Functioning and Overall Well-being in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
This program will test whether a 16-week, twice-weekly group Ideomotor exercise program helps keep thinking, movement, and overall well-being better in healthy adults aged 50 and older compared with a community cognitive training group.

What this trial studies
Healthy, community-dwelling adults aged 50+ who can move independently and follow complex verbal instructions will be enrolled and randomized to either the Ideomotor exercise program or a community group cognitive training program. The active intervention runs for 16 weeks with supervised group sessions twice per week in community gym settings. Participants undergo assessments at baseline, at mid-intervention, and at program completion, and keep a diary to record falls and any adverse events. The trial excludes people with severe neurological or psychiatric conditions, those without medical clearance for exercise, and those who cannot meet attendance requirements.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are healthy, community-dwelling adults aged 50 or older who can move independently, understand complex verbal instructions, have medical clearance to exercise, and can attend at least 75% of sessions.
Not a fit: People with severe neurological or psychiatric disorders, those unable to exercise safely or follow instructions, those who score below the program's cognitive cutoff on the FAB15, or those who cannot attend regularly are unlikely to benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help slow or prevent age-related declines in cognition and motor function and boost overall well-being through an accessible group exercise format.
How similar studies have performed: Broadly, exercise and group physical programs have shown benefits for cognition, mobility, and well-being in older adults, but the Ideomotor Program itself is relatively novel and less widely tested against cognitive training.
