GERONTOPOLE screening for frailty in older primary care patients

Evaluation of Frail Elderly in Ambulatory Primary Care

Observational University Hospital, Lille · NCT05182879

What this trial studies

This is an observational study comparing the GERONTOPOLE frailty scale, as applied in primary care outpatient settings, to the standardized clinical geriatric evaluation (EGS) as the reference. Independent patients older than 65 who attend ambulatory primary care are screened with the GERONTOPOLE scale and then undergo the EGS to determine true frailty status. The primary focus is sensitivity of the GERONTOPOLE tool for detecting frailty in non-dependent older adults. Patients who are dependent (ADL <6/6) or who have had a severe health episode within one month are excluded. The study is conducted at CHU Lille in Lille, France.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are independent ambulatory patients aged over 65 who can attend evaluations at the participating site and have an ADL score of 6/6.

Not a fit: Patients who are already dependent (ADL <6/6), who recently experienced a severe health episode within the past month, or who cannot attend the site are unlikely to benefit from this screening validation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, primary care clinicians could use a brief, validated screening tool to identify frailty earlier and offer timely interventions to reduce complications.

How similar studies have performed: Brief frailty screening tools in primary care have shown mixed but often positive results for detecting at-risk older adults, while direct validation of the GERONTOPOLE scale against a full geriatric clinical evaluation is relatively limited.
