Genomic profiling of prostate cancer in Native American men
Characterizing the Genomic Landscape of Prostate Cancer in Native American Populations (Nat-Geno)
This project will test whether analyzing tumor and blood samples from men who identify as Native American can reveal genes that influence prostate cancer and treatment choices.

What this trial studies
The study will enroll patients who self-identify as Native American and have a confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer, collecting archived tumor tissue and a blood sample within the first year of enrollment. Researchers will perform whole exome sequencing (WES) and whole transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) to map genomic and transcriptomic features of the tumors. Data will be assembled into a comprehensive database with oversight from a Tribal Institutional Review Board and a Community Advisory Board to ensure cultural appropriateness and community engagement. The initiative begins at OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center with planned expansion to additional sites across Oklahoma and later to other U.S. institutions to broaden representation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults (18+) who self-identify as Native American, have a pathologically confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer, and have archived tumor tissue available for analysis.
Not a fit: Patients who are not of Native American identity or who do not have archival tumor tissue available are not eligible and therefore will not benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the work could identify genomic patterns specific to Native American patients that help guide more personalized treatment decisions in the future.
How similar studies have performed: Genomic sequencing (WES and RNA-seq) has yielded important insights in other populations, but focused genomic studies in Native American prostate cancer patients are limited, making this approach relatively novel for this group.
Eligibility criteria
