Genetic and blood markers linked to Menière's disease and symptoms

Genetics and Biohumoral Factors in Menière's Disease

Observational IRCCS San Raffaele · NCT07518069

This project will test whether common gene variants and blood markers that control inner-ear ion balance differ between people with Menière's disease, people with vestibular migraine, and people without vestibular disorders.

What this trial studies

This observational study enrolls adults with definite Menière's disease, a comparison group with vestibular migraine, and non-vestibular controls, primarily in an Italian (Caucasian) population. Researchers collect a blood sample for genetic testing of polymorphisms in genes involved in ionic homeostasis (for example KCNQ1 and KCNE1) and measure biohumoral markers. Genetic and blood-marker profiles will be compared across groups to look for correlations with clinical phenotypes such as episodic vertigo and fluctuating hearing loss. Participants who previously had ear surgery or intratympanic steroid or gentamicin therapy are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults of Caucasian/Italian background with definite Menière's disease by Barany Society criteria who have not undergone ear surgery or intratympanic steroid/gentamicin therapy.

Not a fit: People who have had prior ear surgery or intratympanic treatments, or those without Menière's disease, are unlikely to benefit from the study's findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could identify genetic or blood markers that help diagnose Menière's disease earlier or predict symptom patterns to guide care.

How similar studies have performed: Previous genetic studies targeting inner-ear ion channels have been attempted but produced no definitive markers, so this remains an exploratory area.
