Gastric emptying in people with type 2 diabetes taking GLP-1 medicines

Investigation of Gastric Emptying by Gastric Ultrasonography in Diabetic Patients Treated With GLP-1 Receptors Agonists

Observational University Hospital, Geneva · NCT07506356

What this trial studies

This observational project at Geneva University Hospitals will use gastric ultrasound to measure how much food remains in the stomach of people with type 2 diabetes who have been on GLP-1 analogs for more than three months. Thirty-eight participants will attend three ultrasound visits over a seven-day period to track gastric content after routine meals and fasting. People on insulin, with prior gastric surgery or known gastrointestinal motility disorders, or who cannot lie flat or follow instructions are excluded to keep measurements reliable. The goal is to define how long GLP-1 drugs influence gastric emptying so clinicians can make safer decisions about when to stop these medicines before anesthesia.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (≥18) with type 2 diabetes who have been treated with a GLP-1 analog for more than three months, are not on insulin, have BMI ≤40, can lie flat and follow instructions, and can attend three visits at the hospital are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People on insulin, with prior gastric surgery, known GI motility disorders, hiatal hernia, BMI >40, inability to stop smoking 12 hours before measurements, or inability to lie down or follow instructions are unlikely to be eligible or benefit from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could give clear guidance on how long to stop GLP-1 medicines before anesthesia to reduce the risk of pulmonary aspiration.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that GLP-1 agonists slow gastric emptying, but specific evidence guiding how long to stop these drugs before surgery is limited.
