Game-based scapular rehab for overhead athletes with scapular dyskinesia

Game-Based Rehabilitation for Scapular Dyskinesia Among Frisbee Players

Not applicable Interventional INTI International University · NCT07504653

This project will test a mobile game that guides scapular stabilization and posture exercises to see if it helps competitive Frisbee players with scapular dyskinesia improve pain, throwing performance, and breathing.

What this trial studies

The program uses a three-phase approach beginning with a cross-sectional survey to measure how common scapular dyskinesia is among competitive Frisbee players in Malaysia and how it affects pain, throwing performance, and respiratory measures. Phase two develops a mobile game that gamifies scapular stabilization and postural exercises. Phase three pilots the gamified rehabilitation to measure adherence and changes in clinical outcomes including the Lateral Scapular Slide Test, pain scores, throwing performance tests, and spirometry. Participants are drawn from Frisbee clubs and will complete in-person assessments at the study site with the intervention delivered via the mobile app.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are competitive Frisbee players in Malaysia who train at least weekly for 1.5–2 hours, have full shoulder range of motion, and a diagnosis of scapular dyskinesia by LSST.

Not a fit: Recreational players, people with recent head/neck injuries or recent upper-body surgery, acute fractures, or chronic/active respiratory disease are unlikely to benefit or be eligible for this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the gamified mobile program could improve shoulder-blade control, reduce pain, boost throwing performance, and increase adherence to rehab for competitive Frisbee players.

How similar studies have performed: Digital and game-based rehab has improved adherence and some shoulder outcomes in other populations, but gamified scapular rehabilitation specifically for overhead athletes is relatively novel.
